GIVING TUESDAY WARNINGS

Giving Tuesday is Tuesday November 28th and the Illinois Attorney Generals Office is cautioning potential Lawrence County and other area donors to charity to make wise decisions. Under Illinois state law, fundraisers and charitable organizations are required to register each year with the state. The office recommends donors consider tips to safely giving your money to good causes. Pay close attention to the name of the charity, ask questions about the charity and give only when your questions have been answered. Take caution when giving online and beware of spam email solicitations that appear to be linked to relief organizations. Do not pay in cash. For tax and security purposes, pay by check. Request written information. A legitimate charity will provide you with all information regarding it’s mission, how the money will be used and proof that your donation is tax deductible. Beware of solicitors who use high pressure tactics to get you to give and those who demand cash payments. Also beware of those who offer to send someone to pick up your donation in person. These are all signs of a scam. For additional scam informations, contact the Illinois Attorney Generals Charitible Trust Bureau at (312) 814-2595.
