The Illinois Sheriffs Association (ISA) is warning Lawrence County and other area residents of a phone scam trying to take advantage of the assault weapons ban in Illinois and those counties where sheriffs have indicated they are against the measure. Authorities say that people in those counties are getting phone calls requesting them to make a monetary donation to support the effort in court to overturn the law. This is a scam. The ISA reminds people that they and other law enforcement agencies never solicit donations over the phone. Those getting such calls should be wary.
