Vernon ‘Dee’ Akers

Vernon ‘Dee’ Akers, age 84, of Bridgeport, Illinois passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at his residence after a brief illness from cancer. He was born on July 23, 1938 in Applegate, Illinois, the youngest child of Willard and Carrie (Leonard) Akers. He married Kay Marlene Jones on May 04, 1957, and she survives.

Dee was a truck driver for 71 years, and an owner operator for 30 years. To all of his CB friends, he was known as ‘Hobo’. In more recent years, he worked for Robinson Brothers.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Kay; two children, Rex Akers and wife, Tammy of Bridgeport, Illinois and Leslie Schultz of Lincoln, Illinois; five grandchildren, Amber (Matt) McAdow, Amanda Hutchison, Kylie (Jason) White, Joey Akers, and Cody (J.D.) Akers; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Sunday, October 16, 2022, starting at 2:00 PM CDT at the VFW, located at 511 12th Street in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Memorial donations may be made to the Lawrence County Cancer Resource Center & Wig Shoppe or Good Samaritan Hospice. Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois is in charge of the arrangements.
