Tuesday is the first official day of summer and it will most certainly feel like it across the WAKO listening area as the high heat returns. The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures Tuesday in the low to mid 90s with rising humidity levels bringing the heat index value to near 100 degrees. The heat will remain for the next few days. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is forecasting outdoor air quality levels to be unhealthy for sensitive groups such as the very young, the elderly and people with respiratory issues. The Indiana Department of Evironmental Management (IDEM) has called for an Air Quality Action Day for Tuesday for Knox, Daviess, Gibson and other surrounding counties in southwest Indiana. That designation means that a combination of high temperatures, light winds and other factors are expected to produce conditions where high levels of ozone emissions may exceed federal standards.
