FATAL PLANE CRASH

Lawrence County Coroner Shannon Steffey has released a statement in regard to a fatal plane crash early Saturday. About 2:15 a.m. Lawrence County 911 Dispatch recieved a call from the Federal Aviation Administration regarding a plane that was enroute to the Mid-American Air Center after stopping in Sullivan County and did not reach it’s destination. Local emergency police, fire and medical personnel along with area pilots began a search and rescue operation. That led to the discovery around 7:30 a.m. of a downed aircraft and a body in a wooded area about 3 miles north of the airport. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday with the manner and cause of death as well as positive identification of the deceased pilot pending. It is believed that the pilot was Knox County Indiana Superior Court 2 Judge Ryan Johanningsmeier. The FAA, National Transportation Safety Board and the Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident
