“Iris” Laverne (Chappell) Schroeder

“Iris” LaVerne (Chappell) Schroeder, 85, of Westphalia, passed away peacefully Sunday May 17, 2015 at the Freelandville Community Home in Freelandville, IN. She was born near Vincennes, IN on September 19, 1929, to Claude and Edna (Collins) Chappell. LaVerne graduated from Fritchton, IN High School in 1947. She met her husband of 64 years, Paul E. Schroeder throught the Rural Youth Organization. They were married at Salem Church on February 18, 1951. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a secretary for John Acker accounting in Bruceville. After they were married, she helped her husband on the family farm outside of Westphalia. LaVerne loved to garden and always had a large garden and canned a variety of produce. She and Paul were serious Euchre players and belonged to a card club for many years. They also loved to square dance and travel. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and the Knox County Extension Homemakers.
Along with her husband Paul, survivors include her son, Bill E. Schroeder and wife Kim; granddaughter, Andrea Schroeder Harting and husband Seth; grandson, Scott Schroeder and great-granddaughter, Amelia Harting all of near Westphalia; sister-in-laws, Mildred Duzan of Bloomfield, IN, Helen Parkes of Oaktown, IN, and Carolyn Schenler of Medford, OR.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Claude Chappell Jr.; and sister Mary June Chappell Meyer.
Friends may visit the family on Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home Bicknell Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 11:00 AM also at the funeral home with Rev. Bryan Taylor officiating. She will be laid to rest at Salem Cemetery.
