The Pittsburgh Pirates scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 in game one of their three game series at PNC Park Friday night. The Cub bullpen squandered another game as the hosts scored the tying run on a bases loaded walk before Pirate shortstop Kevin Newman ended the contest with a single up the middle off reliever Brandon Kinstler. The Cubs had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth on a two run triple by Tony Kemp but it was not enough. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Cubs and the 17th loss in the last 25 road games. The loss also drops the Cubs in second place in the NL Central 1 game behind the St Louis Cardinals. The Cubs try to rebound in an early afternoon game Saturday. Jon Lester (9-8) will be on the mound for the Cubs against Steven Brault (3-1) for the Pirates.
