Lawrenceville High School junior Cole Sumner will compete for the Class A state pole vault championship Saturday. He qualified for the final Thursday in the event preliminaries at the IHSA track and field state meet at Charleston. Sumner vaulted 13 feet 3 inches which was good enough to advance to the pole vault final Saturday at 10 a.m. at Eastern Illinois University. Two other Lawrence County athletes also competed in event preliminaries Thursday. Junior Drew Moore of Red Hill High School competed in the long jump and junior Blaine Hesler also of Red Hill High School in the 800 meters but neither qualified for the final in those events.
