Gastroesophageal Reflux Examination in Nuclear Medicine uses a gamma camera to image for gastroesophageal reflux. It uses very minimal radiation. The patient is given a radioisotope mixed with orange juice.
Images are taken with the gamma camera in Nuclear Medicine to determine if contents are refluxing from the stomach into the esophagus.
The Radiology Department also offers X-ray examinations of the Upper GI tract to image the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
This procedure the patient drinks a special drink called barium and continuous x-rays are taken like a movie. The barium shows up on the x-ray showing problems such as hiatal hernias, esophageal strictures, and ulcers.
