Better Hearing and Speech Month

  • Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA members in providing life-altering treatment.
  • For 2021, the theme is “Building Connections.”
  • Jessica Marshall, Speech-Language Pathologist with Lawrence County Memorial Hospital, has been with the hospital since 2009.
  • Marshall explains that at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital they offer Speech Therapy, Swallowing Disorder Services, and Voice Disorder Services.
  • Speech Therapy is the evaluation and treatment of communication, cognitive and swallowing abilities, congenital and developmental disorders in the pediatric population, as well as acquired problems related to stroke, brain injury and neurological conditions. Therapy can take place in the hospital or as an outpatient.
  • Swallowing Disorder Services include modified barium swallow study and VITAL STIM (electrical stimulation for swallowing disorders.)
  • Voice disorders can be described as a change in voice quality, pitch, or loudness. The voice quality can be regarded as inappropriate for the patient’s age, gender, culture or even geographical location as per definition of the Association of Speech-Language Hearing Associations. Causes can be functional, neurogenic or structural.
