64 people were on hand late Monday afternoon to make their thoughts and opinions known on cannabis dispensaries being allowed and governed in Lawrence County. They were in attendance at the second of two public hearings on the issue called by the Lawrence County Board. The board is considering an ordinance that would set up guidelines for the regulation of such businesses who would like to locate in the county. County leaders have been approached on the matter. Many who spoke were in favor of the new businesses citing the revenue that would be gathered by the county through sales. However, those in opposition cited unsafe conditions that could occur if such entities were able to locate in residential areas and many were simply morally opposed to marijuana and its possible effects on the county youth. After about 2 1/2 hours of discussion, the hearing ended with board members taking the comments under advisement. The county board is expected to come to a decision regarding the matter at it’s regular monthly session Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the county courthouse.
