FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

This is Fire Prevention Week-a time to remind Lawrence County and other area residents about the importance of creating and practicing a home fire escape plan. According to the National Fire Protection Association and the Illinois State Fire Marshalls Office, three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. More than one third of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms were present.  The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms. Illinois law requires every household to have smoke alarms within 15 feet of every bedroom and at least one unit on each floor of the home. Families need to plan and work out a plan of escape from the home, in case of fire and know what to do if the fire alarm sounds.
