The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has released the Illinois Aviation System Plan. The document identifies short and long term needs and goals of the state’s airports and is the first comprehensive study of its kind in 25 years. It comes out during this month of August, which is Aviation Appreciation Month in Illinois. The report analyzed 85 public-use airport facilities across the state-81 public and 4 private airports, focusing on ways they can continue to support economies throughout the state, improve the quality of life and boost mobility. Among the airports included in the report were the Mid-American Air Center located in northeast Lawrence County and the Mt. Carmel Airport, which is located in southern Lawrence County west of St Francisville. The study follows the release in 2021 of the IDOT Aviation Economic Impact Analysis it found that the state’s airports annually contribute over $95.5 billion to the state economy and supports over 492,000 jobs.
