PROPERTY TAX PHONE SCAM

The Illinois Better Business Bureau (BBB) and authorities say that a property tax phone scam is continuing across the region and residents should be aware and cautious. Property owners are getting calls from people who say they are with a county office and that they must pay a special property tax or else lose ownership of their land. This is a scam. The public is reminded that county government offices do business by mail or in person and not by phone. No pertinent information should be given by the property owner, if contacted. People receiving these calls can contact the BBB, the Illinois Attorney Generals Office or law enforcement authorities.
