ohn Robert Hamilton, age 89 of Lawrenceville, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, IN. He was born in Bridgeport on October 16, 1932 to Hallie L. Hamilton, Sr. and his wife Mary L. (Little) Hamilton.
On July 3, 1952, John married Carol McNary. For 65 years, they raised a beautiful family, built a wonderful life, and made amazing memories together until her death on January 8, 2018.
After graduating from Bridgeport Township High School, John entered into the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, John attended and graduated from the University of Illinois. He later worked in and retired from the University of Michigan Publication Office.
John’s grandchildren were a great source of joy in his life and he always anxiously awaited any chance to visit them. In addition to family, John loved anything to do with trains. Some might say he was a train fanatic and he even wrote a book called The Oil Belt Railroad. He was also an amateur photographer and volunteered at the Lawrence County Historical Society helping to photograph and catalog their many donations.
Surviving family includes: two daughters- Lisa Hamilton and husband Jerry Gainor of San Francisco, CA and Gail Reilly and husband Brian of Dove Canyon, CA: and three grandchildren- Brian Reilly, Jr. and wife Lauren, Hannah Tran and husband Michael, and Blaine Reilly and Lauren Jennrich.
He was preceded in death by: his parents- Hallie L. Hamilton, Sr. and Mary L. Hamilton: his wife- Carol Hamilton: one sister- Jane Reisinger: and three brothers- Harry, Hallie, Jr., and Don.
Private burial will take place in Lawrenceville City Cemetery. Cunningham-Young Funeral Home is assisting the family during their time of loss.
