Chevron Corporation Environmental Company Monday afternoon and evening hosted their annual tours and open house of the former Texaco Refinery property at Wishnick Park. The refinery ceased operations in 1995 and the location has changed hands down over the years. The 990 acre site in south Lawrenceville was purchased in 2011 by Chevron and since then, the company has been working with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) regarding a feasibility study for cleanup of soil and groundwater issues. The cleanup of the Superfund site will take time, according to company officials but they are still hopeful of finding an eventual use for the property. In addition to hosting the tours and open house, Chevron also awarded local Lawrence County students with scholarships.
