Lawrence County property owners and others throughout the area are being warned about a property tax phone scam. Authorities across southeastern Illinois have been receiving information about people posing as officials from a county calling property owners and demanding that their property taxes be paid immediately or the property will be seized and they will lose it. This is a scam. County assessors and others handling property taxes say that phone calls are never made demanding immediate payment and that most correspondence is done through regular or certified mail. People getting these types of calls should be aware and simply ignore them and contact local or area law enforcement.
