Some stunning news coming from the March regular meeting of the Lawrenceville City Council Thursday night. Mayor David Courtney reported that he had received word from the Illinois National Guard that the federal government had decided that the Lawrenceville Armory located at 1522 Porter Avenue had outlived it’s usefulness and the unit there would be relocated and the site declared as surplus property. The Lawrenceville Guard was federally recognized in June of 1927 and went under Illinois control in October of 1954. The city has been offered the chance to obtain ownership of the building and the council moved to authorize the mayor to enter into discussions with the National Guard regarding that. The council also approved a 5 year solid waste collection agreement with Republic Services beginning April 1st. They approved the application for a Class H liquor license for the BP Station/Lawrence Mart location at 15th and State Streets and after hearing several project options for use of the city STU (State Transportation Urban) funds from HLR Engineering, moved to send those to the Street and Alley Committee for further study and review before a decision is made on what project or projects to do in April.
