Some good economic news for southwestern Indiana this week. Hallador Energy Company through it’s new subsidiary Hallador Power Company LLC will acquire Hoosier Energy’s 1 Gigawatt Merom Generating Station located in Sullivan County. The transaction, which includes a 3 1/2 year power purchase agreement, is set to close in mid-July of 2022 after required governmental and financial approval. Hoosier Energy officials issued a statement saying the deal is a positive development for Sullivan County as it means that more than 100 jobs at the facility will be preserved and a major economic driver for the region will remain active. In January of 2020, Hoosier Energy has said it was embarking on a Long Range Resource Plan which included the retirement of the Merom plant in 2023. At the time, the company did say that they would sell the station if the right deal came along.
