Wendell Lee Poland, age 93 of Lawrenceville, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2022 at the Lawrence County Memorial Hospital. He was born June 24, 1928 in Olney to Robert Lee Poland and his wife Leona Melinda (Wright) Poland.
On February 11, 1967, Wendell married Sharon Louise Reed at the United Methodist Church in Springfield. For nearly 55 years, they built a beautiful life together and made a life-time of memories.
Wendell graduated from Olney High School and then served as a member of the United States Army. He went to further his education at Ivy Tech in HVAC and eventually studied color printing at Vincennes University. After working at many newspapers in color printing, he retired from the Vincennes Sun-Commercial. Wendell and Sharon had a group of friends that they enjoyed spending time with and playing games…especially UNO. He loved his motorcycles and taking rides on them, and hunting was a hobby of his for a time as well.
Surviving family includes: his wife- Sharon Poland of Lawrenceville: four children- Sherrie Tucker and husband Bill, Tim Poland and wife Connie, Jerry Poland and wife Christie, Eugene Poland and wife Pook: thirteen grandchildren- Brandon Tucker and wife Kendra, Wendy Pitts and husband Doug, Marc Smith and wife Taran, Mike Smith, Danae Kirschman and husband Mike, Leah Rohwer and husband Marc, Jessica Kilka and husband Jason, David Poland and wife Diana, Rebecca Poland, Skyler Poland and wife Maria, Tyler Poland and wife Azline, Christian Poland, and Mickey Poland: numerous great-grandchildren: his close cousin- Jimmy Daily: and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Patricia Ann Poland.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Cunningham-Young Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in White House Church Cemetery.
