The Indiana Historical Society announced its Founders Day Award winners this week and the Lawrence County Illinois Historical Society was the recipient of an Indiana History Outstanding  Organization Project Award from the organization. They were honored for their video production of “An Eagle on His Button: The Story of the African-American Civil War Soldiers from Lawrence County.” The film presents the histories of those local soldiers and also of their efforts in context to the broader story of the Civil War and the struggle to end slavery in the United States. The production heavily featured the 28th United States Colored Troops who were based out of Indianapolis. Lawrence County was at one point in history a part of Knox County Indiana before eventually becoming part of the state of Illinois.
