Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzger Monday signed what he called the most comprehensive reform to state firearms laws in over 100 years.  The new bill is aimed at modernizing the Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card system across the state. The new law streamlines the FOID card process. It does not require fingerprints, but does grant those who do submit their prints to automatic renewal. It also combines the FOID and concealed carry license into one card. The law also creates a stolen gun database and in 2024 will require background checks for all gun sales in Illinois. After the bill signing, 55th District Republican State Senator Darren Bailey, a 2022 gubernatorial candidate, issued a statement saying the bill does nothing to curb gun violence and crime across Illinois, but instead prompts innocent people to undergo a redundant process, cost the state resources and FOID cardholders more money. He added that it hurts small businesses and private gun dealers in Illinois.
