CIRCUIT COURTS TO RETURN TO NORMAL

State court systems across Illinois are looking at a return to normal scheduling and operations in the fall. Last week the Illinois Supreme Court issued two new rulings. The first calls for returning to normal speedy trial requirements in criminal and juvenile proceedings effective October 1st. That gives chief circuit judges time to prepare for the delay to be lifted. The second ruling gives chief circuit judges permission to either relax or eliminate social distancing requirements based on local health metrics for courts, also by October 1st. Courts in the state have been operating under special rules brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic for 16 months.
