History was unearthed Sunday in downtown Lawrenceville as the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce hosted the opening of the time capsule buried 50 years ago on the courthouse square. The burial was part of the 150th anniversary celebration of Lawrence County back in 1951 with instructions to dig it up and open it in 2021, the 200th anniversary of the county. Among the items found in the capsule were documents from Illinois Gas Company and Lawrence County Chamber, land surveys of the cities of Lawrenceville, Bridgeport and Sumner, old coins. the Lawrence County Health Department 1969-70 annual report, a signed program by President Richard Nixon, a letter addressed to the current Mayor of Lawrenceville to be read at the July City Council meeting, several letters and envelopes left for relatives and a number of reel to reel tapes made by the late owner of WAKO Radio-Stuart K. Lankford. All the items have been turned over to the Lawrence County Historical Society for safekeeping and display. The Chamber will bury a new 2021 time capsule at 4 p.m. CDT Tuesday in the same location on the courthouse square. Anyone wishing to leave something for the future can contact the Chamber Office during regular business hours.
