NEW LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT MAPS

Illinois Governor J.B. Prtizger late last week signed the law establishing new legislative district maps to govern elections for the next 10 years. Political map lines must be redrawn after every 10 year census to reflect population shifts and preserve voting rights. The new maps were drawn exclusively by Democrats who control the General Assembly in Springfield. As a candidate in 2018, Pritzger indicated at the time he would veto any maps drawn by politicians in preference to an independent commission. However in a statement released late Friday, the governor backed away from the statement noting the independent body never came about.  He went on to say that the new maps preserve minority representation across the state and follow the parameters of the federal Voting Rights Act. Pritzger also signed a law approving new Illinois Supreme Court Districts for the first time in more than 50 years. The moves were quickly criticized by Republicans such as 55th District State Senator Darren Bailey and 110th State Representative Chris Miller. Both men said the governor broke his promises to the people of Illinois to keep politics out of the remapping process
