Levi L. Lathrop

Levi L. Lathrop, age 99 of Bridgeport, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born October 23, 1921 in Sumner to Dennis and Mabel (Petty) Lathrop.

On June 29, 1947 in Newton, Levi married Muriel Foster. She preceded Levi in death on March 10, 1995.

As a young man, Levi served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II. Once he returned and furthered his education, he began a career in education. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois. He taught at Washington Grade School for 16 years and then 3 years at Brookside school as a teacher and principal. For the last 16 years of his career in education, he taught at Olney Central College in the Life Science department.

Levi was a member of the United Methodist Church and had held the position of Superintendent of Sunday School. He was also a member of the American Legion, Illinois Retired Teachers Association (IRTA), and State University Retirees System (SURS).

Surviving family includes: one daughter- Karen Lathrop of Lawrenceville: two sons- Stephen Lathrop of Sumner and Dennis Lathrop of Cody, WY: two sisters- Norma Leturno of Carpentersville and Phyllis Jankowski of Titusville, FL: four grandchildren: and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents- Dennis and Mabel Lathrop: wife- Muriel Lathrop: two brothers- Gerald and Leonard Lathrop: and two sisters- Beulah Ledet and Dorothy Falke.

A private graveside service will take place at Cresthaven Memorial Park Cemetery. Cunningham Funeral Home is assisting the family during this time of loss.
