John O. Merrell, age 55, of Sumner, Illinois passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Aperion Care in Bridgeport, Illinois. He was born on March 05, 1966 in Olney, Illinois, the son of Olin L. and Clarenda ‘Louise’ (Phillips) Merrell. He married Cindy Umfleet on May 07, 1988, and she preceded him in death on December 15, 2014. He married Violeta Medrano Sangil on January 17, 2017, and she survives.
John worked for McKim’s IGA for many years. He was a member of the Calvary Apostolic Church. He enjoyed playing the drums, listening to his favorite rock group, KISS, going to Bobe’s Pizza, building model kits, telling jokes, laughing, and making people laugh. He had a big heart, and will be remembered as a loving brother, father, grandpa, and husband.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Violeta; two children, John David Merrell of Deatsville, Alabama and Jessica Marie DeVoss and husband, Josh of Greenwood, Indiana; two sisters, Lisa Merrell and Mary Merrell both of Lawrenceville, Illinois; and one grandson, Doug DeVoss.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Illinois is in charge of the arrangements.
