Here are some postscripts to the Tuesday General Election in Illinois. Voters rejected the proposal to abolish the state flat-rate income tax for one that would take a greater share from wealthier taxpayers. It was a top priority for Governor J.B. Pritzger, who said it would generate an extra $3 billion annually to pay down state debt. He said after the defeat that without the money, there would have to be reductions and cuts in state government and blamed the wealthy and powerful for the loss. Those against the proposal said it would hurt small business and give the state more tax raising power in the future. 24 counties across the state voted to separate their counties from the city of Chicago. The largest group of counties voting for the issue were the group along the border with southern Indiana including Lawrence, Crawford, and Wabash counties. And in the 2nd Judicial Circuit, all five judges on the ballot were retained. All needed at least 60% of the people to vote “Yes’ to be retained in the 12 county circuit and all recieved at least 75%.
