Despite some complications and delays, the Lawrence County General Election 2020 is now in the history books. Unofficial totals from the Lawrence County Clerk’s Office show that in contested races, Republican Cheryl Winkles defeated Democrat Tonya Cox for Circuit Clerk 3,951 votes to 2,3o7 and for County Board District 6 incumbent Republican David White defeated Democrat challenger Ryan Curtis 712 to 544. In the various questions on the ballot in Lawrence County, for secession of the rest of Illinois from Chicago the vote was 4,528 yes and 1,547 no. On the City of Sumner alcohol prohibition the vote was 167 no and 104 yes and on the fair tax amendment to the state constitution the vote was 4,695 no and 1,206 yes. Republicans dominated the state and federal voting in Lawrence County with wins by Donald Trump for President, Mark Curran Jr for Senate, Mary Miller for 15th District Congress, Darren Bailey for 55th District State Senate, Adam Niemerg for 109th District State Representative and Chris Miller for 110th District State Representative. Of the 9,122 registered voters in Lawrence County, 6,431 cast ballots in the election for a voter turnout of 70.5%.
