The Illinois State Fire Marshalls Office is reminding Lawrence County and other area residents to test, check the expiration dates and replace the batteries in home smoke alarms as daylight saving time ends this weekend and clocks are turned back. In 2019 there were 91 residential fire deaths across Illinois with most of those occuring in homes without working smoke alarms. A 2017 Illinois state law requires that 10 year old sealed smoke alarms be installed in all homes built before 1988 or that do not have hardwired smoke detectors by January 1st of 2023. At 2 a.m. Sunday clocks should be turned back 1 hour. Daylight saving time will return on March 14th of 2021.
