A Lawrence County man who was driving a garbage truck that killed a Mt Carmel woman in 2019 has been sentenced to 9 years in prison. Wabash County States Attorney Cassandra Goldman announced that 34 year old Derek Wells of Bridgeport was under the influence of methamphetamine when the 2018 garbage truck he was driving rammed the side of a vehicle being driven by Brenda Morehead at a rural county road intersection with Illinois Route 15 in Wabash County in early March of 2019. Morehead died in the collision. Wells was charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, a Class 2 Illinois felony. He will be required to complete at least 85% of the sentence. Wells will also be on two years of mandatory supervised release after his prison term.
