Vistra Energy this week announced plans to retire all the coal plants owned by it’s subsidiaries in Illinois including the Newton power plant in Jasper County in southeastern Illinois. The Newton facility is expected to close by 2027. The utility did say that the closures could occur sooner depending on economic and other conditions. Jasper County economic officials hope that the company will consider converting the plant to generate solar energy and battery-storage power. Fewer than 40 people remain employed there.
