A new state law taking effect Wednesday in Illinois further cracks down on distracted driving. Those caught now face a minimum fine of $1000 and could have their licenses suspended or revoked. Motorists in Illinois could also lose their license under a new state law if they fail to yield at a crosswalk and seriously injured someone. In Indiana, using a handheld cellphone while driving becomes illegal Wednesday under a new state law. The new driving law does allow cellphone use by motorists only with hands-free or voice-operated technology, except in emergencies.
