ILLINOIS UNEMPLOYMENT IMPROVES

The Illinois Department of Employment Security announced that the unemployment rate for the state fell 2 percentage points to 15.2% in May based on preliminary data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the IDES. The state unemployment rate was 1.9 percentage points higher than the national jobless rate of 13.3% during May and it was up over 11 percentage points over the state rate for may of 2019. Individual rates for Lawrence and other counties in southeastern Illinois were not yet available.
