NEWTON RALLIES TO NIP INDIANS

The Newton Basketball Eagles scored the final seven points of the game and came from behind to beat the Lawrenceville Indians 53-51 and win the Little Illini Conference Boys Tournament Consolation Championship at Paris Friday. The Indians fell behind early but surged ahead in the third quarter by seven before the Eagles narrowed the margin to 39-37 entering the final period. The Indians led by two 48-46 with 1:30 to play but Newton took the lead for good with a 3 point basket with 55 seconds to play. They then pressured the Indians into several turnovers and turned those into free throws and eventually a 53-48 lead before Jarrett Winkles of the Tribe hit a three pointer at the buzzer to make the final margin 53-51. Blayne Winningham scored 16 points and Noah Weger added 13 for the Indians who fall to 12-10 on the season. Next action comes Friday when the Indians head to Olney. Marshall beat Robinson 69-57 to take third place and Casey-Westfield captured the championship with a 48-39 win over the defending champion Richland County (Olney) Tigers.
