The Lawrenceville City Council voted Thursday night to not prohibit adult-use cannabis business establishments from inside city limits in the future. The vote was 5-4 with Mayor Don Wagner casting the deciding vote. That now paves the way for such businesses to locate in the city after the legalization of recreational marijuana by the state of Illinois starting in 2020. The matter now goes to the council legislative committee for further study on local controls. Also approved was a 10 foot easement on city owned property at the industrial park east of the city for fiber optic cable installation. A low bid of approximately $469,ooo was accepted for the sewer line reclamation project planned on the east side of the city. An agreement was approved to allow the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs to continue to be located in the basement at City Hall. Mayor Wagner did present Keys to the City to Jim and Pam Nolan for their continued volunteer public service to the city.
