Yu Darvish struck out a season high 14 and allowed only 2 hits in six innings as the Chicago Cubs salvaged a split of their four game series at San Diego Thursday with a 4-1 win. The hosts did threaten in the bottom of the ninth when Manny Machado was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded but reliever Rowan Wick struck out Luis Urias to end the contest. With the victory, the Cubs remain tied with Milwaukee for the second NL wild card. The Brewers open a weekend series in St Louis Friday night while the Cubs are back at Wrigley Field to face the Pittsburgh Pirates. Game one of the series is a late afternoon start with Stephen Brault (4-4) going for the Buccos against Jon Lester (12-10) for the Cubs.
