Iowa Man Sentenced in Fatal Gibson County Accident

court-4

A Gibson County Judge sentenced an Iowa man to three years probation Wednesday after he pleaded guilty last month to a charge of Reckless Homicide. In May 2017, 69-year-old Kent Hayenga of Linn Grove, Iowa was traveling through Gibson County when he ran a red light and hit University of Evansville student Devin Cyr who was stopped at a red light. Authorities say Hayenga was speeding when he hit Cyr’s car at the intersection of US 41 and County Road 100 West.  Cyr died from injuries he received in the crash. Hayenga agreed to plead guilty to reckless homicide in exchange for other charges being dropped. He likely won’t spend any more time behind bars for the fatal crash, unless he were to violate conditions of his sentence.
