
The Chicago Cubs cooled off Matt Carpenter and increased their lead in the National League Central Division. Jose Quintana worked seven strong innings and Kyle Schwarber belted a tiebreaking solo homer to propel the Cubs to a 7-2 win over the St Louis Cardinals Sunday at Wrigley Field. Quintana blanked the Redbirds after falling behind 2-0 in the fourth inning. He gave up six hits and four walks in helping the Cubs win three of five in the series. Carpenter was 1 for 4 with a single after homering in a team record tying six straight games. He was 9 for 17 overall in the series with six homers and 10 RBI. Willson Conteras delivered a pair of run scoring singles for the Cubs who moved 3 1/2 games in front of Milwaukee. The Cubs remain at home to open a four game set with the Arizona Diamondback Monday night. It will be Patrick Corbin (6-4) pitching the opener for the Dbacks and Luke Farrell (3-3) going for the Cubs.
