Joan Cynthia Mills, age 81 of Chauncey, passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2017 in Vincennes, IN at Good Samaritan Hospital. She was born in Chicago on February 28, 1936 to Joseph and Anna Dick.

Artrel “Art” Mills married Joan Dick in Columbia, IL on December 29, 1966. He preceded her in death on September 23, 2012.

Joan was a long-time member of the Chauncey United Methodist Church. As a young woman in the mid-1960’s, Joan work for the U.S. Department of Defense as a secretary for defense mapping. She then moved to Lawrence County with her husband, Art, and became a homemaker and sold advertising. Joan owned and operated Gloria’s Flower Shop in Bridgeport for many years. Joan had always dreamt of being a dress designer. She enjoyed sewing and making clothes. She was also an amateur writer. Most of her writings were short stories and poetry. Joan also loved gardening and the beauty of flowers. She was a fun-loving woman than always enjoyed the company of others.

Joan is survived by and will be deeply missed by her son, Scott A. Mills of Chauncey.

She was preceded in death by: her husband- Artrel “Art” Mills: her parents- Joseph and Anna Dick: two sisters- Betty Jo Rampenthal and Barbara Wrishnik: and one half-brother- Joe Dick.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 30, 2017 in Bridgeport at the Cunningham Funeral Home. Visitation will also be held on Saturday at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 12:00 noon. Burial will take place in Cresthaven Memorial Park Cemetery near Claremont.
