Robert L. Otten

Robert L. Otten, 87, died peacefully Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at his home. He was born September 9, 1929, to Ernest and Hazel Hoalt Otten in Wheatland, IN.

Robert L. Otten graduated from Fritchton High School in 1947. He enlisted in the US Army in 1951 and served from 1951-1954.  He served in Korea during the Korean Conflict where he was in the Third Infantry Division,  Second Armored Brigade, 64th Tank Battalion. He was promoted to Battalion Motor Sergeant of the 64th Tank Battalion. Robert was among the youngest Sergeants ever to hold the position of the Battalion Motor Sergeant.

He married Esther Ellermann on August 22, 1954 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. They enjoyed 63 years together.

He was a lifelong farmer in Palmyra Township. He was well known across the country as a swine breeder producing prize winning hogs.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother Carl Otten and sister Marjorie Phillippe.

He is survived by his wife Esther Otten, son Randy, daughter Aline, grandsons, Robert and Cory, 2 great grandsons, nephews Eugene and Jerry Otten and several great nephews and great nieces.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion and St. John’s Lutheran Church.

The funeral will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 8th and Scott St., Vincennes, IN. at 12:00 on Saturday, August 19, 2017. Visitation will be Saturday, August 19, from 10:00 am until 12:00.
