More than 90 Army jobs at Crane which would have disappeared as part of President Trump’s federal hiring freeze, were saved Monday, according to U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly.

The jobs, at Crane Army Ammunition Activity (CAAA), will be exempted from the federal civilian hiring freeze and are part of the Army’s first round of exemptions for CAAA employees whose terms expired in January or February of 2017.

Donnelly recently sent a letter to Secretary of Defense James Mattis asking that the Secretary exercise his discretion under the president’s executive order to exempt CAAA from the freeze. He also met with the acting-Secretary of the Army Robert Speer last week to discuss options for saving CAAA jobs.

Donnelly said he will continue pressing the Army leadership to exempt personnel with terms expiring in March and April, which are still under review by Army leadership.

About 130 CAAA employees were expected to be impacted by the 90-day hiring freeze.
