Fire units in Gibson County and the surrounding were called to battle a large field fire near the Whispering Heights area west of Oakland City.
Crews battled flames from 10-am until almost 6 local time Friday. State Road 64 was shut down at the Oakland City Junction when authorities told us that the fire was about to jump the road near the I69 interchange. The road was opened back up just before 6 Central Time. There was a point when emergency vehicles couldn’t reach the fire, so crews were taking water to the fire via backpacks. No evacuations were ordered. It’s believed a heavy rain that started in the late afternoon was helpful in getting the fire out.
