Fire heavily damaged a former Vincennes tavern Sunday morning. Firefighters were called out after 8:45 Sunday morning to the former Club 202 Tavern at 22 North Second Street.

Fire Chief Sonny Pinkstaff says smoke was visible coming from the building when they rolled up on the scene. After making initial entrance into the building, Pinkstaff says firefighters had to evacuate and continue battling the fire from the outside.

Three ladder trucks with high pressure hoses poured water down on the burning building after the roof had collapsed. Pinkstaff says it took about 2 hours before the fire was extinguished. Vincennes Township Fire Department brought in one of its ladder trucks to assist fighting the fire.

Pinkstaff says adjoining businesses suffered smoke damage, but no structural damage.

Utilities were disconnected causing some Vincennes businesses to lose power for a time as firefighters battled the blaze.

Pinkstaff says the cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time. An investigator from the state fire marshal’s office has been called in to help determine how the fire started.
