A Washington man died after he was thrown from the bicycle he was on when it was hit from behind by a Chevy Trailblazer.

The call came into the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department at 2:21-pm Sunday about the accident on Sportsman’s Road, north of Daviess County Road 400-South.

The Sheriff’s Department says a group of cyclists were riding from the Daviess County Airport to Glendale Fish and Wildlife area.

64-year-old Michael Thurston of Washington was riding southbound when he was hit from behind by the Trailblazer driven by 92-year-old Robert M. O’Brien of Washington. Thurston was thrown from the bike into a yard.

Other riders performed CPR on Thurston until Southwest Medical teams arrived.  He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead of massive internal injuries. Authorities say he had on a yellow safety shirt but no helmet.

An autopsy is planned and the investigation is continuing.
