The rise in temperatures can cause issues……….

OZONE ALERT

State officials have issued an ozone advisory for some of Indiana’s urban areas due to poor air quality during what’s forecast to be a sweltering weekend. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says levels of ozone, a powerful lung irritant that’s the main ingredient in smog, will be high through at least Sunday. Weekend temperatures are forecast to climb into the 90s statewide. The agency says elderly residents, children and anyone with heart or lung conditions should reduce their physical exertion if they live in some urban areas. The advisory covers central Indiana, the Indiana suburbs of Louisville, Kentucky, and southwestern Indiana both Friday and Saturday. Saturday’s advisory also covers northern Indiana’s Elkhart and St. Joseph counties. Sunday’s advisory will cover southwestern Indiana and the Louisville suburbs.

HEAT ADVISORY

High temperatures are predicted in Indiana over the coming weekend and into next week. As temperatures hit new heights on Saturday, so do the risks for heat-related illnesses. Emergency medical professionals with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security are encouraging Hoosiers to take heat-safety precautions. Heat exhaustion occurs when a person can’t replenish the amount of hydration lost during extended periods of sweating. Heat stroke occurs when a person’s internal temperature regulation system fails. Dr. Olinger urges people who are going to be outdoors this weekend to drink plenty of water. Avoid carbonated or alcoholic beverages. Be sure to take frequent breaks during outdoor activities, and try to avoid activities during the hottest part of the day. Its also important to check on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning.
