A valuable ally in keeping the dog population at the Vincennes Animal Shelter down is going away. Shelter Director Laurel Arial says as of July 31st PetSmart Chairities is discontinuing their Rescue Wagon Program. The program assisted animal shelters across the country in finding new homes for the pets. Arial says Petsmart has undergone a lot of changes. She says they anticipate the agency will still provide some type of assistance in the future, but for now they are ending the Rescue Wagon program. However, Arial told members of the Vincennes Board of Works Monday that their is an animal shelter in Lansing, Michigan which has had success in finding new homes for dogs. She says they’ve been taking animals from across the country and might be interested in some of the puppies that the local shelter might have available. Unlike Rescue Wagon, Arial says the Lansing Animal Shelter would be unable to reimburse them for the deworming and other medical vaccinations the animals receive. Arial reported that so far this year, the Vincennes Animal Shelter has taken in 327 dogs and cats. Of that number, 122 have since been adopted,
