City engineer says a major project could be done in three phases.

Vincennes City officials are once again looking at road improvements along Main Street to Richard Bauer Drive.

At Thursday’s Redevelopment Commission meeting, City Engineer John Sprague explained that INDOT recently issued a call for projects for 2021. Because the scope of the Main Street Project is so large, he suggested dividing it into three separate phases.

Sprague indicated the state only has 110-million dollars available for the next round of projects. He says there is no way INDOT would commit 20-percent of its funding towards one project.

Instead, Sprague recommended the R-D-C fund phase one of the project which will include adding sidewalks on both sides of the street, adding a turn lane along with storm sewers and gutters.

Sprague believes by showing the city’s willingness to pay for a portion of the improvements, The state will look more favorable on funding for the rest of the project.
