Two days of services are set to begin for an Indiana sheriff’s deputy who was fatally wounded during a gunfight while trying to arrest a man.

Visitation for Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz begins Monday afternoon at Northwestern High School, near Kokomo, where Koontz was assigned part-time for the past two years. The 27-year-old deputy’s funeral will be Tuesday at the high school, with organizers expecting hundreds of police officers from across the state and country to be in attendance. Police say Koontz was shot during a March 20th gunfight inside a mobile home in Russiaville (ROO’-shuh-vil) while seeking a man wanted for missing a court hearing on a drug paraphernalia charge.
