Vincennes University student Michael Boger, Vincennes, is among the top three finalists in a competition to select the crest design for the USS Indiana attack submarine.
VU students majoring in the Graphic Design/Visual Communication transfer program submitted their designs as part of the contest to select the new crest. The project was suggested by VU President Chuck Johnson, according to Pravin Sevak, associate professor of art.

Sevak’s graphic design class started work on designs in January, following the guidelines of the USS Indiana Commissioning Committee in Indianapolis.

Recalling his life-long interest in art, Boger says one of his strengths is “looking at things in a different way.”  It’s a trait that Sevak says made Boger a strong competitor in the contest.

A 2014 graduate of Vincennes Lincoln High School, Boger will earn an associate’s degree in Graphic Design this spring, before pursuing a second VU associate’s degree in Athletic Training.

Entering the contest has already led to Boger accepting an invitation to enter a second graphic design contest for the USS Indiana that will begin this summer.

According to the USS Indiana Crest Contest, the design should be a “graphic representation that reflects some aspect of the State’s features, history, tradition, and people in a positive way and connects the State of Indiana to the State’s Namesake Vessel.”  It should also include the USS Indiana motto:  “Silent Victors.”
